The Hills Church was formed on February 24, 1847.
In 1961, the Hills Church joined the United Church of Christ, a denomination formed in a union of the Congregational Christian Churches and the German Evangelical and Reformed Church.
Today, there are nearly 6,000 UCC congregations in the United States. The UCC affords its churches great local autonomy, while uniting us in mission and values we simply could not achieve on our own.
The UCC is a church of many “firsts.” Through our Congregational history, we were the first church in “the new world.” Since then, we have been at the forefront of many issues and opportunities. In 1785, we were the first denomination to ordain an African American minister. In 1853, we became the first church to ordain a woman minister, and in 1972, we became the first denomination to ordain an openly gay minister.
